Another Handful of Tips 37 – Influence
Five of the best tips to help you become influential at work
Everyone likes to feel they can make a difference. We like to be listened to and have our opinions and views considered and our contribution appreciated.
Here are tips that could help you.
1. Be dependable, conscientious and loyal
By demonstrating a true commitment to your employer you are more likely to have your views considered by management.
People who are reliable and get things done on time are the ones who are appreciated, especially during difficult times.
2. Listen carefully
If problems arise, try to understand all points of view. Don’t take anything for granted. Don’t rush in with a solution. What is the real reason for the problem? What is not being said?
Try to present an honest, sincere, logical solution based on the benefits to the organisation. If you are considered a fair and clear thinker you will be listened to and be appreciated.
3. Accept responsibility
When there is a difficult job to be done, volunteer to do it. Be prepared to take on extra tasks or responsibilities. Your managers will remember you as an eager worker. You will be appreciated and it might benefit your career.
4. Praise and encourage people
Many people lack confidence , so a few words of praise for their work will boost their self-esteem
If you have to criticise their work be helpful and constructive and always find something to praise.
People respond to flattery provided it is not over done.
5. Gain respect
Make the time to show an interest in your colleagues’ lives. Socialise with them.
Remember family names and their interests.
Be honest, sincere and helpful. The more you can do for them the greater will be your influence.
