Good leaders inspire their workers to raise their performance to higher levels and help them improve their skills. They can be recognised because their people display superior performance and get things done.
Five ways to develop your leadership skills
*Improve your communication and training skills
Learn the art of effective ‘one to one’ communication. (Speak the language of the people where you work.)
Keep your messages honest, simple and clear.
Learn to speak to an audience and write in basic English so all can understand, regardless of their background.
Learn to chair interesting, effective meetings, where things get done.
*Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way
Accept responsibility at work and in professional and social organisations.
Volunteer for tasks. Learn to make fast and effective decisions.
*Develop an enthusiastic loyalty to your employer and organisations you support
Work with little or no supervision
Be passionate about your job and full of enthusiasm for your ideas. Remember, ‘enthusiasm is contagious’.
Set a good example both at work and in the wider community. Lead by example.
*Learn the art of delegation
Delegate to where the action takes place in the organisation. Give your workers responsibility.
Discuss changes or problems with your workers. Consult them so they feel involved in major decisions.
*Learn the skills of people management
Support your workers.
Give credit when credit is due.
Counsel people with personal as well as work-related problems.
