Rolling On – Management Tip 52 – LEADERSHIP SKILLS

LEADERSHIP Skills

Good leaders are always in demand so make an effort to improve your leadership skills.  Leaders can be recognised because their people give superior performances.

          A good leader inspires and motivates people to go beyond what they thought they could accomplish.

          If you can combine intelligence and humanity with enthusiasm you are likely to be a  good leader.

           The art of leadership consists of getting people to do what you want to be done because they want to do it.

A handful of tips to improve your leadership skills

* Improve your communication skills

          Make a special effort to keep your messages honest, simple and clear.

          Keep records of names and brief details so you can call people by name and take an interest in their interests.

* Your enthusiasm can be contagious

          Try always to have  a positive attitude. Be passionate about your job and full of enthusiasm for your ideas.

          Accept responsibilities and learn to make fast, sound decisions.

          Leaders are people who know where they want to go, and with enthusiasm, get up and go.

 * Lead by example

          Become a role model at work and in the community. Dress well, be polite and keep ‘your cool‘ at all times.

* Learn to be a skilled delegator

          Delegate down to where the actions take place in the organisation.

          Give your workers responsibilities. Discuss changes or problems with them.

          Consult them so they feel involved in major decisions. Make them feel important and wanted.

           You will please more people by listening to them than talking to them.

* Give credit

          Give credit for workers’ successes and support them when they make mistakes.  Mistakes are a good way to learn.

          A simple “Thank you. Well done” is a great way to encourage people to make greater efforts.

          High-performance organisations have moved beyond autocratic leadership styles into the cooperative approach where management and staff share their vision.
