Starting a NEW JOB as a TEAM-LEADER – Management Tip 77

Tread softly when you move into a new job. You will be watched and judged from the day you arrive.

Consult staff and keep asking questions. “How can we do better?””What changes do we need to make?”

A handful of tips when you  become a new team-leader

* Select an experienced assistant

        You need someone to alert you to the traditional procedures, to tell you the history and the politics of the organisation and the business.

* Meet the team

        Your first major task is to establish a rapport with the senior staff, the influential workers and any important clients.

        Move around the workplace and chat to people. Introduce yourself to them during coffee and lunchtime breaks. Ask them their roles and seek their opinions. Be friendly and humble.

        Learn their names and ambitions.

        Get introduced to clients and seek their advice.  Find out their needs and wants.

* Before making changes

        Win respect first before making any changes. Consult leaders first and seek their support .

        Ask the simple ‘what’, ‘why’, ‘when’, ‘where’, ‘how’, ‘who’, and ‘how much’ questions.

*  Target a few early winners

        To gain early support carry out new projects where you can achieve successes quickly . Nothing succeeds like success.

* To become a successful new leader

        Have a tenacity of purpose.

        What you know and who you know are very important.

        Gain the necessary resources to make any changes needed.

        Try to make some early changes to improve working conditions for your people.
