DECISION-MAKING Rolling On – Time-Saver Tip 20

DECISION-MAKING –

Make Sound Assessments

       Indecision can be the worst error some people make.

       Aim to make sound fast decisions after you have studied the topic and thought through all the consequences.

       Many decisions are easy to make but hard to implement.

A Handful of Tips to help you make good decisions

* Avoid snap decisions

     Don’t make decisions under pressure or when you are stressed.

       Give your full attention to the important decisions.

* First collect the facts

       Assess the situation after you have collected all the relevant facts.

       Try to balance an intuitive hunch with a sound logical analysis.

* Examine alternatives

       Before making a final decision examine the alternatives.

       Make use of policy guidelines and past experiences.

       Consult people whose judgement you trust or will need to implement an outcome.

* Consider the possible outcomes

     Ask what can go wrong.

       Try to anticipate future developments and any changes in the situation.

* Ask simply questions

     Keep asking: “WHAT; WHY; WHEN; WHERE and HOW MUCH?”

       Next consider people, profits, conflicts, materials, machinery, methods and the environment.

       After weighing up the implications be prepared to take risks.

       Once you have the facts and considered the best decision take care not to procrastinate, implement your decision fast.
