PUBLIC RELATIONS – Management Tip 26

Improving Your Public Relations

         It’s no use icing a stale cake. The same applies to public relations. It is no use spending money on improving your public relations unless your organisation is in good shape.

         An organisation’s reputation is one of its greatest assets.

         Good public relations must be associated with the integrity and the performance of your organisation.

         Building an excellent public image takes time, money, and commitment, but it could be lost with one foolish action.

         Good staff morale, good information systems, and sound training of front-line staff are critical to good public relations.

         Never forget the cheapest and the most effective advertising you can get is word of mouth, when your own people, and clients, enthusiastically recommend your organisation’s activities to others.

         Senior managers are responsible for the overall programmes but good public relations should be the responsibility of everyone in the organisation – there are no exceptions!

A Handful of Tips to Improve Your Public Relations

* Take Stock

         What are people saying about your services? Do you get many complaints?

* What is the staff morale like?

         Do you trust them? Do they trust you?

         Have you delegated down to where the action takes place?

* Involve Your People

         If your teams are enjoying their work and are having fun it will spill over to the media and to your clients.

* Improve Communications

         Your people must be involved in team building and in decision-making.

         Make sure they know what’s going on.

You must have good internal communication systems in place.

          Consult your people. Make them feel important. Listen and question them.

* Give Outstanding Customer Service

         Try to give your customers a special service so they are loyal to your services and products.
