Tips for Leaders
The art of leadership consists in getting people to do what you want to be done because they want to do it.
The key to leadership is to accept responsibility.
Good leaders can be recognized because their people give superior performances.
A Handful of Tips to help you improve your role as a leader
* Be fair
Be fair, but firm.
Don’t take things for granted.
* Set an example
Become a model worker – work hard, set a good example, and dress well. Look like a leader not one of the mob.
* Rewards
People work harder when there is something in it for them.
Things that get rewarded get done.
People rarely change unless it’s to their advantage.
* Innovation
Innovation thrives on encouragement and dies with regulations and bureaucracy.
* Mistakes
Give your people the right to make a few mistakes – it’s the best way to learn.
Those who do nothing do not make mistakes.
Make your people feel like winners. Nothing removes a ‘chip on the shoulder’ like a ‘pat on the back’.

“Leaders must belong before they can lead.”

I remember you once coming up (from Head Office note) to Ruakura to talk to us research/extension staff and asked the question – what’s the main thing you want your boss to do?
And I remember blurting out – to just let me get on with my blardy work and not waste my time in your meetings! And you agreed with me!
