Make a DIFFERENCE – Management Tip 40

Everyone likes to feel they can make a difference, especially when they have an influence on someone, or on something.

         We all like to be listened to and have our opinions and views considered and our contribution appreciated.

         Good humanity, humility, and humour will take you far.

A Handful of Tips to help you make a difference

* Become dependable, conscientious, and loyal

         By demonstrating a true commitment to your employer, and your colleagues,  you are more likely to have your views considered.

         People who are reliable and get things done on time are the ones who are appreciated, especially during difficult times.

*  Listen carefully

         When problems arise, try to understand all points of view – don’t take anything for granted.

         Don’t rush in with a solution.  What’s the real reason for the problem?  What is not being said?

         Always try to present an honest, sincere, logical solution based on the benefits to your employer.

         If you are considered a fair and clear thinker you will listen to more, and be appreciated.

*  Accept responsibility

         When there is a difficult job to be done, volunteer to do it.

         Be prepared to take on extra tasks or responsibilities.  The leaders will remember you as an eager worker and it should help your career.

* Praise and encourage people

         Many people lack confidence, so a few words of praise for their work will help boost their self-esteem.

         If you need to criticize their work always try to be helpful and constructive and try to find something to praise.  People respond to flattery, provided it is not overdone.

* Gain respect

         Make the time to show an interest in your colleagues’ lives – socialize with them.

         Remember family names, their interests, and their hobbies.

         Be honest, sincere, and helpful. The more you can do for others the greater will be your influence and your rewards.
