When living in Bangkok we use to joke about going into hospital with one complaint and coming out with another.
Well that’s what happened to me in New Zealand. I went into hospital with a cracked hip bone and came out a month later with a chest infection. Having said that I couldn’t fault the service – it was outstanding. The doctors and the nurses come from many countries.
This is my theory about why it was so good.
I have run many multinational workshops in many Asian and Pacific countries. I have found when I had a multinational group they strived to work harder than if they all came from the same country.
The nurse that was putting me to bed at night was a fully qualified dentist from the Philippines. One of the aids was from Thailand and I even had a nurse from a village in Nepal where the Ghurkhas are recruited.
Many qualified New Zealanders depart for foreign lands. Many go to gain new experiences, some to earn more money. They depart to Australia – our large sister country. Many go to the United Kingdom – our mother country.
Many of their replacement come from the Asian and Pacific countries. They bring us new ideas, work harder, and strive to raise their standard of living.
I believe there is a special energy having a medical service staffed by doctors and nurses from many lands. I am not sure what it should be called, perhaps medical-vigour?
